Les mots qu'elles eurent un jour (The Words Women Spoke one Day)

A black-and-white film from 1962, women in lively discussion – but without sound. The now-deceased cameraman Yann Le Masson filmed Algerian activists after their release from French imprisonment. In his film essay, filmmaker Raphaël Pillosio attempts to give them back their voices more than 50 years later. To do so, he visits the protagonists in person, listens to their stories, and uses lip-reading to reconstruct what was said. It becomes clear: the hopes for equality and freedom back then were not realized for these women. (Anja Klauck)
