Braunau am Inn is best known for one thing – it is Adolf Hitler’s birthplace. But how does the community, and the people within it, deal with this legacy and burden? This question gained new relevance in 2016, when the Austrian Parliament decided to expropriate the former owner of the house where Hitler was born. But what should happen to the house now, and what is the appropriate way to handle it? In his multiple award-winning film, director Günter Schwaiger explores this question, interviewing people from Braunau and uncovering personal family connections in the process. (Joachim Kurz)
