But both the reconstructions and the new visions always arise on the basis of memory and what has been. Progress rushes forward until the state of immortality blurs the boundaries of time. The documentary METZGERGRÜN deals with dreams of living in the sunny city of Freiburg im Breisgau. Subtly, with powerful images and words, social inequalities and the question of human dignity are discussed in the context of gentrification. People from different milieus speak up. The film is about the residents of the socially deprived neighborhood of Metzgergrün, where cheap housing is being demolished and replaced with luxurious apartment houses, as well as an interior designer who has to satisfy the wishes of her customers, such as a shower toilet with the sound of chirping birds. Two hikers come across a hypnotic-looking water pit in a dry desert. The water pit is now the trigger for an all-encompassing conflict: Should they settle down or keep wandering? What follows is an emotional as well as physical separation of the two initially inseparable wanderers. A magical border fence of moving sticks has opened up overnight and one of the hikers wakes up lonely in the morning. On a rousing search for his partners along the newly drawn border, he encounters a new comrade-in-arms, or perhaps more likely an adversary? In the end he meets his lost partner and instead of a warm reunion he is given an ultimatum. It turns out that his partner is the border-guard.… >>>
